India is the world’s largest producer of milk and most of the milk is produced by smallholder dairy farmers. However, quality and spoilage are the two biggest challenges. One key factor affecting quality is the time lag between milking and the first chilling. Even slight delay in chilling causes irreversible damage to the quality of milk. Milk needs to be chilled to 4°C at the earliest to arrest bacterial growth.
Keeping in mind the rural infrastructure of India, we developed MilkoChill – an instant milk chiller (160 and 250 litres in an hour) with thermal storage which eliminates the need for a diesel generator set. The patented technology in makes it possible to chill milk at source – thereby reducing spoilage, retaining quality, increasing shelf life and hence increasing farmers’ income.
This sustainable and innovative product balances the need for chilling infrastructure reduces carbon footprint. Powering MilkoChill with solar energy further reduces environmental impact.
In the existing milk supply chain scenario, the time between milking and first chilling needs to be minimized to improve the quality of milk and reduce spoilage. We have moved the chilling closer to the farmer who will now be able to chill milk instantly, in small volumes, immediately after milking. Thermal storage allows chilling even in the absence of electricity at the time of chilling
Instant chilling also has the benefits of retaining nutrients and better quality products made by milk processing. Milk collection by dairies can also increase by collecting milk from remotely located collection centres which were not possible earlier due to milk spoilage in transit because of long transit time at ambient temperatures. Low bacterial count milk also opens up the possibility to export the milk increasing sales for dairy.
